Language and Social and Emotional Vulnerability at School: Ovens Murray Renews its Focus

Speech and language, along with school absenteeism, are burning issues for vulnerable children in the Ovens Murray area.

The community has a distinct opportunity to make a positive impact and improve the lives of children in the region that are affected by these issues.

In light of this, the Ovens Murray Children and Youth Area Partnership has refined its work to focus on these key areas:

  • Speech and language vulnerability, and
  • Social and emotional vulnerability leading to school absenteeism in the early years of primary school.

In the Ovens Murray area, social and emotional vulnerability is increasing–and there is a local context to many of the issues that lead to this.

Everyone can play a role in making a difference, and communicating the issues is vital in order to band together, and work collaboratively to make a difference in these key areas.

The Area Partnership is identifying new ways of working together and will lead the community to understand its shared responsibility to improve the lives of children and their families in Ovens Murray.

The Ovens Murray Children and Youth Area Partnership is taking a number of steps to better understand the issues.

  • Taking a deeper look at the data to identify how many children are impacted and which places to focus our initial strategies.
  • Speaking to our families and service providers about why they think the data is worse for our area and what factors might be contributing to this.
  • Reviewing what the evidence says about the impacts of these issues on future outcomes.
  • Map what is already happening in this area, and identify where we can we learn from others

The Ovens Murray Children and Youth Area Partnership will use this information to identify key strategies that will:

  • identify models that work, and share the learning with other entities working in the early years sphere in the Ovens Murray area, and
  • develop and test new ideas, and approaches to help our children thrive.
